A massive steel mill complex with several buildings fills this area. There is also an ore dock for unloading raw ore off ships. The mill consists of a coke oven, blast furnace, open hearth furnace, rolling mill, power house, machine shop and warehouse. Raw ore is brought in by ship and train. Finished products are shipped by rail car and trucks.
How does a steel mill work?
The blast furnace and all of the other mill buildings are Walthers HO scale kits which have been kit-bashed to approximate N-Scale. That means that all of the railings and doors have been replaced with N-Scale parts... fortunately there are no windows. Also, about one inch has been removed from the bottoms of the buildings to reduce the height. The open hearth furnace and rolling mill are more or less scratch built from the corrugated panels in the Walthers rolling mill kit. Three kits were used to build these two buidings.
